Just catching up.

Today, Becks and I braved the masses in attempt to accomplish a myriad of pre-holiday errands, including a trip to get the oil changed in my car and go to the courthouse to get our cartags renewed - always a pleasant experience, what with all those cheery state employees. {I kid you not, there was not one person in line when I arrived, about 5 available employees, and everyone of them failed to acknowledge me for the first two minutes I stood there with my very present (read: loud) child.}

I also had about a bazillion Christmas presents to find, buy, and wrap.  And, keep in mind, I had to do all of this with a TWO-YEAR-OLD in tow.  That meant that I stocked the diaper bag full of goldfish, juiceboxes, and lollipops in an effort to abate any tantrum-throwing, stroller-resisting, running-away-from-mama type situations.  For the most part, he really was a true gem, but there were moments when the Target popcorn just wasn't cutting if, reminding me why Christmas shopping with a toddler likely qualifies as some form of abuse.  I'm just not sure who comes away tortured the most, though - the parent or the child?

In short, I am - dare I say it - done Christmas shopping.  I even managed to buy 2 toys from Santa without Becks even knowing it.  I did have to convince him that the long handle hanging out of the bag was a broomstick when he question it (it was a hobby horse).  He bought it.

* * * * * * * * * *

We were MIA this weekend because we went to the Lakehouse with my parents and sisters.  They treated us to a train ride with Santa and dinner on Saturday night.  Becks, being all into locomotives right now, thought the train was pretty darn cool.  The fact that Santa visited with him while enroute, even cooler.  The fact that the train blew its whistle multiple times during the trip, the coolest.

The best pic I could get of all three of them!

What's a trip to the Lakehouse without bacon?

B and Aubbers.

Mom, Me, and Becks.

Santa was pretty serious into lecturing the kids about being good.  Not kidding.

Santa requested this picture.  He he he.

Showing Becks Cumberland Falls.  Kinda creeped me out!
And - I can officially say it - the semester is OVER.  Praise God.  I'll blog more about it later, but I would have to say it was one of the most difficult four months of our lives as an individual, couple, and a family.  Brandon finished off the semester smashingly, the first half of the school year is behind me, and I only have 15 more credit hours to go until I see an enormous increase in my teacher salary (I kid).  We owe more than we can imagine to that tiny baby in the manger.

Now, I'm off to drink  twelve a Diet Coke to calm down from the Christmas chaos, and enjoy the first naptime of many over the next couple weeks :)  Happy Monday, y'all!

"It's About the Cross"

The men's singing group at our church sang this song this morning and I thought it was fantastic! Thought I'd share it with you!

Go Fish – About The Cross lyrics
Verse 1:
It’s not just about the manger
Where the baby lay
It’s not all about the angels
Who sang for him that day
It’s not just about the shepherds
Or the bright and shining star
It’s not all about the wisemen
Who travelled from afar
Chorus:
It’s about the cross
It’s about my sin
It’s about how Jesus came to be born once
So that we could be born again
It’s about the stone
That was rolled away
So that you and I could have real life someday
It’s about the cross
It’s about the cross
Verse 2:
It’s not just about the presents
Underneath the tree
It’s not all about the feeling
That the season brings to me
It’s not just about coming home
To be with those you love
It’s not all about the beauty
In the snow I’m dreaming of
Repeat Chorus
Bridge:
The beginning of the story is wonderful and great
But it’s the ending that can save you and that’s why we celebrate
It’s about the cross
It’s about my sin
It’s about how Jesus came to be born once
So that we could be born again
It’s about God’s love
Nailed to a tree
It’s about every drop of blood that flowed from Him when it should have been me
It’s about the stone
That was rolled away
So that you and I could have real life someday
So that you and I could have real life someday
It’s about the cross
It’s about the cross

Frustrated and Grateful.

Have you ever felt 2 completely different emotions at the same time?  Well, that's pretty much my life in a nutshell.  I am so incredibly frustrated with Tripp's situation right now.  I feel like he has absolutely no quality of life.  And I know I've said this before, but it's true.  He hasn't been out of the house in weeks.  And I know some of you are probably thinking "Well, take him somewhere, already?"  And those of you who are thinking that most likely haven't been seeing what I'm seeing.  Just the fact that he doesn't have a fever right now (most of the time) and the fact that I don't think he has an infection is enough for me to know that because he's been confined in the house, he's been feeling better on the "infection"-wise.  If that makes sense.

But my dad had an idea that maybe we could just take him somewhere in the car to go look at Christmas lights where he doesn't really even have to get out.  The problem mostly comes with his eyes.  They are a MESS.  Right now, he hardly opens the right one- especially outside, he just can't.  Thank God for the fact that he learned how to just open one so he can see (I think).  The left eye is half-way covered with skin.  When he wants to make sure it's big bird that he holding (which he's been faithfully holding for going on about 4 weeks now), he will pick him up and bring him all the way over to his left side so he can see him- and then he smiles :)

After a rough bath yesterday, he felt so much better.  I'm on the fence about whether or not to bathe him every day.  It's close to physically and emotionally impossible for me, but I know that it makes him feel better.  The other thing is that it takes up a good 3 hours with set-up, bath, and clean-up... so that takes up a good chunk of his day.  If he was spending that time playing, I'd say no... BUT he's spending most of his days with his eyes closed on the rocker.  SO... decisions, decisions.

My next frustated rant is about his mouth (anyone seeing a pattern in my blog, yet?  eyes, mouth....) Sorry but they are two of the most frustrating and sad things.  Okay, I'm gonna get a bit sappy here, but I don't think I've done this in a while.  I know this because yesterday was the first time I've cried "I hate EB" tears in a while.  It's heart-breaking.  There's no other word for it.  Sometimes looking at him, I literally feel like someone could have stabbed my chest, taken my heart out, and just left it on the floor.  I'm not familiar with all the diseases in the world, and I know there are tons that probably very few people know about (like EB), but I promise you that EB is up there on the list of the worst ones.  How this disease can affect every single inch of Tripp's body continues to baffle me.  Literally, from the hairs on his head... to the tips of his toes.  And what gets Tripp through this?  We comfort him, hold him, smile at him, sing to him, laugh at him, kiss him, and talk to him every second even when he's sleeping.  I can't fix it, I can't take it away, and I can't make it feel better... but I know this- I'll die trying.

So what gets me through this?  God and You.

Do I know God?  No.  Will I ever know God and know why this is happening?  I don't know.  Will I spend the rest of my life getting to know God and trying to find out?  Yes.  I like to think that God knows exactly what He's doing and that all of this is happening to bring me closer to Him.  And I'm well-aware that one day all the answers will be laid out for me.  And it's not until then that I will understand.

Meanwhile, I am surrounded by considerate, thoughtful, generous, and genuine people.  I'm not just saying this- but I really do not have the words to describe the amount support that I've been getting.  I'm kind of speechless.

Tripp has two different pharmacies: (I know, Megan... but I'm careful:)  CVS because they are open late and I've used them from day one, and Central Rexall in Hammond, which is a compounding pharmacy where I get his meds that need to be compounded.  Both places have far exceeded my expectations in a pharmacy.   I love the "small and personal" aspect of Central because I got to know the staff and they know me.  A nice staff member and another friend set up for me to have a credit there.  And they also go as far as to think of new treatments for Tripp or to say, "Hey Courtney, how's the little man today?" when I walk in.  That's a good pharmacy.

And you might not believe it, but I can say the exact thing about CVS (I can only speak for the one in Ponchatoula).  I am floored by the pharmacists and staff there.  The head pharmacist there, Trea Landry, actually came to our house to meet Tripp, not knowing us from Adam.  I thought that was "out of this world" nice.  He not only came to visit, but brought a big basket of toys and goodies for Tripp from Disney World.  He and his wife, Amber, had just gotten back from taking their son Alex there for his birthday.  They said each time Alex picked out a toy for himself, he also picked one up for his "special friend" Tripp.  That makes me smile.  Not only when kids are so sweet and innocent, but when parents teach their kids to be kind.  Then there was another basket of goodies for me (a new Bible, a book, candles, etc), and ANOTHER basket full of over the counter supplies that he saw I use from the blog.  But I'm not done.  Then hands me a card from the CVS staff.  They all pitched in to do something nice for me, but he said they wanted me to choose, so just gave me the money.  Trea has been so incredibly nice and offers his help or the help of his staff if we need anything.  His sweet wife even offered to do any Christmas shopping that I had left.  I thought that was just so nice.

Then, the other day I got a package in the mail.  Seems that a History professor, Sarah Hyde, who found my blog shared it with her students-  2 schools, 3 different classes.  And she sent me mounds of checks from her students for Tripp's fund, stating that each one comes with a prayer.  She has over 320 students.  I was literally SPEECHLESS.  Kind, generous, selfless strangers are the reason that I can suck it up, and do what I need to do for my son.  There are GOOD people in this world, please dont forget that.  To Sarah Hyde and each and every student who participated in this fundraiser... I'll never be able to thank you enough.  And Ms. Sarah, can you please e-mail me so I can contact you :)

There have been so many people reaching out to us, that if I listed every one I'd be here forever.  Two local schools have done fundraisers, people have sent me movies personally picked out by each family member especially for me, cards, flowers, food.... All I can say is that I am so blessed and so very grateful.  I know that everyone is so genuine when they ask if they can do anything to help me.  I know this because when my sister's best friend, Aly (who lives just right down the street from us right now) had triplets a few months ago, I wanted to do something to help her so bad... get her lunch, pick up something from the store, help burp a baby- anything!! (Aly was supermom from day one and didn't need my help) But still, I know what it felt like to just WANT to help so bad- like all of you do.  But all I need is help talking to God.  He hears us in numbers.  Tripp needs a miracle.  And I believe in miracles.

I hope everyone remembers the "Reason for the Season" this year.  Jesus was born at this time.  He suffered and died on a cross to save OUR sins because it was God's will- not His, so that we all can have eternal life in heaven.  Try and remember that as you celebrate with your familes.  Because that gift you wanted but didn't get, or the dessert that got smooshed in the back of the car, or the fact that aunt "Sally" was 20 minutes late for Christmas dinner when everyone was waiting.... really doesn't matter.  Enjoy your families, enjoy your friends, and enjoy your children.  Because you can't get these times back.

Advent Adventures: December 17th

Another week of December has come and gone and I can hardly believe it! We are having so much fun doing Christmas-y things in our household! I really don't want it to end!!I think the difference this year is that Piper is finally old enough to really get what is going on! Here is what the past week looked like for us...

We've set up a Christmas reading center which the girls LOVE! They are crazy about books to begin with but this is extra special. Each morning, I read a new book then add it to their book shelf. They have been spending so much time in this spot!

We finally got the tree up and decorated. Thankfully, Daddy was there to help as I had a major headache that morning but I still managed to take some pics and hand out ornaments! My favorite part is telling them little stories about where the ornament came from or why it was given.

Piper did a lamb craft after reading The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado. This was a sweet little story about a lamb who because of his crippled leg can't go to the far away fields with the shepherds and other sheep. By having to stay back at the stable, he finds that God has a reason for everything, even our disabilities, as that night it is the lamb who has the honour of snuggling up to the newborn baby, Jesus to keep him warm.

We spent a day on candy canes starting with "Legend Of The Candy Cane C" by Lori Walburg. Then we made marble painted candy canes, an idea we got from Hubbard's Cupboard Christmas.

Legend of the Candy Cane

Look at the Candy Cane
---what do you see?
Stripes that are red
like the blood shed for me.
White is for my Savior
who's sinless and pure!
"J" is for Jesus, my Lord,
that's for sure!
Turn it around and a staff
you will see---
Jesus, my shepherd,
was born for me!
---Author Unknown

We then went on to make these pretty and yummy Candy Cane Sugar Cookies. Piper enjoyed rolling them out and tried braiding them although that was a bit more daunting of a task!

She worked on colors by coloring each present according to the directions on the card. This was an activity from 1+1+1=1's Christmas Tot Pack. Piper is getting really good at identifying her colors (finally!).

She enjoyed doing a puzzle of baby Jesus but it wasn't easy. I think this is probably due to the fact that the pieces don't fit together like a regular puzzle but she liked it so much she asked to do it several days in a row! (Also from the 1+1+1=1 Christmas Tot Pack)

We did a day all about the star that God used to lead the wise men to Jesus. She did this star craft that we found at Hubbard's Cupboard Christmas, sang "Twinkle, Twinkle Christmas Star" from 1+1+1=1 Christmas Songs and read "The Tiny Star" by Arthur Ginolfi.

I put together a Christmas sensory basket for the girls but brought it out for the first time when Piper was away on a sleepover. This way Taitum got the first chance to explore it (Big sister can be a bit bossy at times, esp. with new things!) and we spent some fun 'Tot School' time together checking everything out!

We read "Who Is Coming To Our House" by Joseph Slate and did an activity where Pipe had to sort the People from the Animals. No problem-o! Except she couldn't tell me what animal the goat was. They say you learn something new every day and that day she learned what a goat looks like! :)
Christmas pre-writing skills...this was interesting...I'd try to help, she didn't want help, I'd back off, she'd start going off course so i'd offer help again, she'd accept it until she was doing well again, then "No, Mama! Me do it!"...you might notice on the last one, I simply gave up!

For some cutting practice, Piper cut out the pieces of the stable, star, and baby Jesus then glued them onto paper to make the nativity scene. Cutting is another thing I see great improvement in! For her stocking, I ordered Koopy scissors and am anxious to see if they prove helpful in learning this skill!
(The last 3 activities came from the 1+1+1=1 Nativity Preschool Pack)

We've also been learning Luke 2:11 by using the Songs for Saplings Christmas song and this printable from Totally Tots. Taitum especially loves this song because there is clapping involved!

Finally, today, we worked together on decorating our wrapping paper! We used brown packing paper and stamped it with tempra paint. I love the look of it! And its a lot easier to wrap with since it doesn't tear as easily! Notice Piper hopping down the paper, stamping as she goes along! Such a cutie! Now onto wrapping the gifts...next week!

Only one week til Christmas Eve! I hope you all are enjoying this season and taking some time to relax and enjoy it! Next week, we will be working on Christmas gifts for the family (but that's top secret!).

Snowday Tidbits...

A pic of us taken on this exact day last year!
  • The snow hit, as the weather people predicted it would, so not typing up sub plans yesterday wasn't in vain.  However, the bad news is that the reason I was taking off was to see my spritely little elf sing in his preschool's Christmas Pageant.  Since they operate on the same snow day schedule as the county I teach in, that meant that Becks' school was cancelled too. Boo.  They're rescheduling after the new year.
  • I've had a productive - but lazy -  kind of day.  I started the crockpot around 10am this morning, and the savory smell of stew is making my house smell perfectly delicious. I can hardly wait until 5pm :)  When Becks gets up we're making chocolate chip cookies to really round out the snow day smorgasbord.  Yum.
  • I bought myself some birthday gifts (because isn't that what we all do, ladies?) from NY&Co, including tall yoga pants.  These, believe it or not, are very hard to come by.  And for $14.97 a piece, I'll take three please.  {FYI: Everything is 40% off today and when you use a code you can get $50 off a purchase of $100.}
  • Many of you have asked about my WIWW posts.  Honestly, I've been so busy {and forgetful!} that I haven't been snapping pics of my outfits daily...or even for the past month!  Maybe I'll be back on the WIWW train during holiday break :)
  • Today, I've built, put away, and rebuilt several looping train tracks throughout the living room.  Right when we clean everything up, Becks wants to play with them again.  Figures.
  • In case you missed my edit, the headband headwarmers were made for me by a girl from church.  However, there are plenty of Etsy retailers who I'm sure would love your business!
  • I may lose followers for this admission, but it's a risk I'm willing to take (and I think most of you probably already know about my MTV reality show addiction).....I might have also taken 2 minutes of my time today to watch the trailer of Teen Mom 2, which is looking like it's going to be a pretty entertaining season.  Love it.
  • I spent about 30 minutes trying to locate a personalizable bean bag chair for Becks for Christmas, not realizing that omiword these things cost upwards of $100!  Any suggestions, friends?
  • If you haven't already, check out my Headband Headwarmer Giveaway posted below!
  • I wrapped 24 Junie B. Jones books today to give to my firsties tomorrow - if we even have school.  Truly, though, I do want school to be in tomorrow because no teacher wants to have a Christmas party the first day back to school after the holidays (which our principal has asked us to do if we're cancelled tomorrow!  The horror!).
  • I got my first birthday card in the mail today, among a half-dozen Christmas cards.  I love getting the mail in December.
Happy Snow Day, blog buddies!

The Letter A and The Color Green

For the past 3 weeks, Piper and I have been concentrating on the letter A and the color green. I've enjoyed taking it nice and slow with her. Although she enjoys learning, Pipe is the kind of kid that gets bored fast if you don't keep it interesting (or maybe thats just part of being 3??). So I went to work finding lots of activites for her to do that would focus on 'A' and green!

Here she is glueing things that start with the letter A onto her alphabet sheet that we hang on the wall. She cut everything out herself! I got this idea from the Homeschool Creations printables page.

Next, we made playdough! Piper helped with everything from adding the ingredients to stirring to kneading the dough! The recipe for this was very easy and basic. I highly recommend it!

Obviously, we colored it green!

Then Piper used it to form an 'A' on her playdough letter mat (also found at the Homeschool Creations printables page.)

A word to the wise: wear gloves when dying the playdough if you want to avoid having a green thumb for days....

On another day, she made an alligator 'A'.

This activity was a great discovery! Its a finger tracing paint bag that I discovered on the A is for Apple page at Confessions of a Homeschooler! It was so simple to make and Piper LOVED it! We'll definitely be using this with all of our letter units!

This apple tree matching game is also from Confessions of a Homeschooler's 'A' is for Apple page and was another big hit with Pipe!

We have been using the Songs For Saplings CD which I ordered recently. Each song is a verse from the Bible with each verse corresponding to a letter in the alphabet! The songs are simple yet catchy and a wonderful way to combine memory verses, music and letters that we are learning! At Totally Tots they have printables for each song in their In My Heart section.

"Keep me as the Apple of Your eye." Psalm 17:8

Continuing with our lessons on the color green, we took a few days to read the book, The Grinch by Dr. Suess and watch the movie! My girly is in love with this classic Christmas story and who can blame her?!

We decided to paint a picture of the Grinch after reading the book for the first time this year. It was a perfect opportunity to show her how blue and yellow make green since I had no green paint on hand that day. She enjoyed doing the mixing herself and watching the colors change into a new one!

Finally, Piper practiced printing the letter 'A' on this tracing card (again from Confessions of a Homeschooler). I had it laminated so she could use dry erase markers and practice over and over again!

Piper is not the type of child that memorizes things like her ABCs easily (she remembers lots of other things, like promises of chocolate or sleepovers but rote learning is not her thing). Despite all my efforts, there were days that I would point to the letter 'A' and ask, "What letter is this?" and get a "Um..." or "B!"....sigh...I really wondered if all these activities were sinking in. Then just the other day as she was standing on a chair at the counter with me to help bake cookies, she said, "Look, Mama. Its 'A'!" I stopped to see what she was pointing at and sure enough on the clock of our coffee pot was the teeny tiniest 'AM'! I was so happy! My girl is getting it! She is learning...FROM ME!! What a great feeling! Now she is pointing out every 'A' imaginable to me! A perfect gift for an amateur homeschooling Mama!

Flower Headwarmer Headband Giveaway!

Before I even received all the sweet comments from y'all on my flower headband headwarmer pictured in a recent post {thank you, btw!}, I had a little something special in the works for my bloggy friends.  As silly as it sounds, I truly do feel like I know many of you and I enjoy every sweet comment that you make!  Not only did I want to show my appreciation for your readership, but I also wanted to include you in my birthday celebration - which usually gets lost in the Christmas hubbub.  I was always that kid that had to bring cupcakes to school before or after the winter vacation (darnit, mom and dad...but then, I can't really talk since Becks' birthday is in June!).

Anyway...

I am giving away THREE darling headwarmer headbands!  Yay!  I have three colors to give away - purple, cream, and black, and they look absolutely fantastic on.  They're wonderful for this winter weather and because they're made to be worn loose-ish, they don't give you hat head and remove effortlessly.  I, for one, am obsessed!
