Hanging in there...

Maybe by a thread... but still hanging.  My little trooper is still fighting so hard.  He's been having good days and bad days, very inconsistently.  And a good day is defined by standing up in his little 5x5 area and playing with his toys for about 15 minutes at a time. The biggest issues right now would have to be his eyes, his mouth, and his trach/breathing.  And bath... I won't even go there. Terrible.

His eyes are just beyond horrible... there are no words.  And they are only getting worse by the day... literally.  He's becoming a little more frustrated as it gets harder for him to see each day.  You can tell by the way he reaches for things, and brings his toys all the way to the corner of his left eye to be able to see it.  Like I said before, the eye doctor said that his right eye already has half the vision of his left... and both eyes (the left one worse) have granulation tissue growing over his eyeball.  The right eye is more than half-way covered.  I've put a call in the the eye doctor... not really even knowing what I'm going to ask, but just making sure with him one more time that we have no other options.  For this poor child to lose his vision along with everything else going on, is just borderline cruel.

His mouth just kills me.  He's had teeth since he was about 3 months old.  Imgaine how it would feel if you had never brushed your teeth for almost 2 years.  I really just can't imagine how his poor mouth feels.  Then on top of just "feeling yucky," he's got sores covering his lips and tongue.  Not to mention, that he must have cavities and rotting teeth in there that I'm sure is painful.  I fully understand the dentisit's concerns about putting him out and trying to do something with his mouth.  It's somewhat the same deal as the eyes... if you irritate any of the mucous membrane tissue, it becomes raw and can fuse to any other surface.  There have been cases in other EB babies, where after dental work, their mouth has been fused together completely, with tissue sloughed off in places.  I'm not thinking I want to go there.  I just wish there was something we could do.  I've been using Biotene spray- but you can imagine how he loves that.

And his breathing- where do I begin?  With this weather the way it's been... he has been SO dry.  He can hardly stand up to play for 5 minutes without having to lay back down with his humidifier on.  And no- he will not wear it standing up.  Nothing can be "in his way" when he's standing and trying to play, including us people who are always in his face.  So I've been doing breathing treatments, high steroids, changing his trach when need be, and keeping him on his humidifier most of the day... and he's still having the most trouble he's had in a while.  I'm almost positive that it's the sore acting up below the trach.  And I don't like that at all.  But I'm doing everything I am supposed to be doing.

He hasn't left his little "comfort zone" in months.  When he stands up, we ask him if he wants to go outside, ride his car, anything... and the answer is always "no."  For a child who cannot speak, he SURE can get his point across.  But there are also times when I tear up because he will stand up signing "more" and we try everything to figure out what he wants and we can't.  He gets so frustrated and gives that pouty lip and wants to get back on the rocker.  It's so sad.  But MOST of the time, he can communicate with us very well and let us know exactly what he wants without a word.  He can say "NO" very well (just like any other 20 month old can), and now his "yes" is tilting his head all the way back with a big huge smile.  It instantly melts your heart.

On another note, I'm sure all of you are very aware that a child with special needs puts a strain on a marriage.  Well, in our situation... that has surely been the case.  Randy and I have been seperated since July and Tripp and I have been living with my parents (who have been A-M-A-Z-I-N-G).  I have tried to be very respectful in keeping our personal issues off the blog, but I also know that it will be coming out sooner or later.  I don't want to go into detail and I hope everyone will respect that.  Both Randy and I love our son.  And everything being done is in Tripp's best interest.  I do, however, want to say thank you to Tripp's MeMe, who comes to help me at least 4 times a week- rain or shine, regardless of my good mood or my bad mood (which is hit or miss these days).
And thank all of you for your support- this has been a difficult time for everyone involved.

And with that... I will leave you with my precious angel...
whose smile gets me through the toughest of days.

What I Love About You, Piper

Oh, Piper Grey, there are so many things I love about you but for now, here are a few...

I love how you sit back and relax in your cushy chair while waiting for Mama to come get you in the mornings! The conversations I hear coming from your room are priceless!

I love how sweet you are to your little sister! It seems like you've been 'reading' to her from the moment she entered your life! Sure, you bicker the way sisters do but I know that you will be friends forever.

I love how you become obsessed with things for periods of time. Like braids (lately you need not just 1 but 2!)...

A donkey who you call 'Baby' and insist on dressing everyday...

And a purple purse that must accompany you everywhere!
(Did I mention your most recent passion, photography??)

I like how much you adore the outdoors! So much so that even on the coldest of weeks, I must bundle you all up and take you out even if we can only stand it for 25 minutes at the most!

I like how you greet me when I arrive home from getting groceries - like I'm a long lost friend! "Mama, I missed you!" followed by a bear hug!

I like how you say "Thank you so much!" and "Maybe someday!" when I tell you you can't have something you want.

I like how you hide under your blankets every night when you know I'm coming in to give you a kiss and giggle relentlessly when I find you!

I like how you say, "Aw! That's cute!" when Daddy gives me a hug or kiss.

The list could go on and on my sweet girl, but the point of the matter is - I'm crazy about you!

Meet the Teacher!

My bloggy BFF is doing a fun Teacher linky!!!  And I'm playing along, too :)

If you want to link up, check out sweet Cara at The First Grade Parade.

This is me.  Babbling Abby.  Or just Abby.  Abs if we're thisclose. I love my family, God, teaching, Diet Coke, and finding your old pair of designer jeans at Goodwill.  I long for dinner and drinks with my girls, springtime when local neighborhoods open up their yards and garages to sell me their cast-offs, and for summer nights up north in Michigan.

B and I have been married for almost five years and have one little pumpkin named Beckham.  We're amidst a kitchen remodel and always DIY.  I want to have another baby soon-ish.

I graduated from the University of Kentucky (C-A-T-S!) with a bachelor's in psychology, and then went back to school for a second bachelor's in elementary education.  I'm currently pursuing a master's in education with a concentration on administration.  I graduate in December (PTL!).

This is my 3rd year teaching - I taught half-day kindergarten for two years and looped this year to be a first grade teacher.  I {heart} first grade.  It's my fav and I hope I stay there for awhile.

{...Q & A...}

Q: Now, tell us one thing about yourself:
A: Abby isn't my real name.  It's a nickname for Abigail, which is my middle name.  I kept all of my names when I got married inluding my 2 first last names (long story!), so my legal name is W_______ Abigail S________ K________  M___________.  Ridiculous, no?!

It's Tuesday. And it's random.

1.  I woke up to a sheet of ice blanketing my car this morning.  I was for sure there was going to be a delay.  I stalked the internet for updates to closings/delays, watched the scrolling bar at the bottom of my TV screen for my county, and continuously checked my phone to make sure I didn't miss the call.  Nope.  Nada.  Nothing.  We had school all day today and my kids were cah-razy.

2.  On that note, I really need Punxsutawney Phil to not see his shadow tomorrow.  I know about 24 firsties in desperate need of the warm weather to return so we can have outdoor recess again.  Better yet, I know countless teachers who could use it more.

3.  Becks is such a cutie.  I know he's mine and I'm completely biased, but this smile just melts my hearts like a s'more.  He's just as sweet, too :)

4.  My 10-year highschool reunion is this summer, so I'm totally okay to not focus on baby number two until after, say, August.  That will also get me through one more bathing suit season...

5.  The sweetest thing my husband did this week?  Picked up two 12-packs of Diet Coke.  Without being asked.

6.  The kitchen remodel is...ridiculously...s-l-o-w.  {Note to my husband: I am not complaining.  Just acknowledging that DIY isn't a fast process.  And, I love you ;) }  On the upside, we've had outlets moved and added, and B is painting the ceiling.  On the downside, everything in the house is covered in a fine layer of drywall dust.  Achoo!

7.  So pumped for Teen Mom 2 tonight.  I'll just go ahead and say that Leah and Corey are by far my fav couple.  I'm really rooting for them.  And their twins are precious.

8.  Is there anyone else who is floored that January is over?  I mean, really, 31 days of 2011 are gone.  Just like that!

9.  I'm pretty sure there are days at a time where all I drink is Diet Coke and/or coffee.  So. Not. Healthy.  It doesn't help that any water I want to drink at home right now has to come from the bathroom faucet which is barely big enough to fit a Dixie cup under.  Just making excuses...

10.  I just want to say a big old THANK YOU to those of you who have purchased something from me from my TpT store.  I am truly, truly, truly grateful.  In a gobzillion ways.

The work week will be half-way over by tomorrow!  Wahoo!

The Quest for Homemade Snacks

Since the new year began, I've been attempting new recipes in hopes of finding ones that jive with the kids and are fairly simple to make. I'm tired of buying all the boxed stuff - you know, Goldfish, Teddy Grahams, Nutrigrain bars and the likes. At first, I was very motivated to accomplish this. I found some great *looking* recipes and was confident they would work out and be a hit! (Can you tell I'm an optimist?!)

My first endevour was to make my own fruit leather. I had come across a recipe at Weelicious that gave me the idea. I happily bought some strawberries, added honey to them, pureed them, spread them on a cookie sheet and popped them in the oven. No problemo! The smell was glorious and I couldn't wait to try this all natural, sure to be fabulous snack! The kids would be over the moon!

As you might guess, it didn't turn out that way. 4 hours later, the outside edges of my fruit leather was burnt and the middle was soft and mushy. Sigh. I pulled it out and cut out the small portion that was perfectly done. It tasted fantastic and the kids did love it...but it was enough for about a quarter of a snack. I tried to pop the mushy part back in the oven, hoping it would turn out just like the pieces we'd just eaten. No such luck...it burnt to a crisp!

In that same week, I had a go at making cracker type sticks - Carrot Snack Sticks to be exact, also from Weelicious. To make a long story short, it was a FAIL!

I was slowly feeling like perhaps I was a little dissillusioned with the idea that I could make my own snacks for the kids. Sure, I could just make chocolate chip cookies every day but thats desset in my mind, not a snack! I reverted to some ol' faithful muffin recipes and baked them in the mini muffin tin I got for Christmas. I needed some kind of victory albeit a small one!

Then today I decided that maybe I'd try my hand at another snack idea - granola bars. I didn't get my hopes up. In fact, I even put chocoalte chips in them rather than raisins or something more wholesome like that figuring that if they were a total flop at least they would have one redeeming quality. The kids will eat anything if there is chocolate in it!

To my surprise, they turned out great, tasted just like a granola bar should and they passed the kid test! WAHOOOOO!

So give them a try! You won't be disappointed! My only issue with them was that I did substitute the coconut oil for olive oil. I think the coconut oil would have added a really nice flavour to it plus I can smell the olive oil and I don't like it. (Weird, right?!)

Lastly, don't let my bad experiences discourage you from checking out Weelicious. There are some worthwhile recipes on there. I've started making Veggie Pancakes and both the kids and I love them! I'm even considering trying the fruit leather again someday when I stop being angry about the last batch!
